In Canada, the population of people with disabilities increases on a daily basis. Many are qualified to work with post-secondary education and valuable skills, but may face barriers to obtaining employment. Employers are increasingly aware of the benefits of a diverse workforce that includes people with disabilities, but there are still common barriers in place that impact people’s ability to secure meaningful and sustainable work. As such, it is important for employers to be prepared to accommodate those with disabilities and to understand the barriers that are often removable.
In this course, you will learn about:
- Understand the physical, communicative and social barriers that impact people with a disability on their journey to find employment.
- Learn effective methods to remove common barriers in the workplace.
- Understand the benefits of universal design and how it promotes an inclusive and diverse workplace.
- Learn about the nuances of disability and how many are actually invisible and may include conditions such as mental health illnesses.
- Understand how the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) supports employers on their journey to becoming more inclusive.
- Understanding the importance of mental health in the workplace and encouraging disclosure to foster inclusivity.
- Reaping the benefits of a workplace that is equipped to hire, accommodate and retain employees with disabilities.
