How to be Physically Active While Using a Wheelchair

Today, we’re talking about how to be physically active while using a wheelchair, and the importance of physical activity after a spinal cord injury. In this Peer Connections event, Alex Wexler, an aspiring neurological physiotherapist who is completing his masters at UofT, discusses physical activity, walks us through how to be physically active while using a wheelchair, and exercise as it pertains to Spinal Cord Injury.

What do physical activities look like for a person with disabilities, and what are the benefits and guides for adults with spinal cord injury? Alex walks through exercises that can be done at home, and covers many topics including guidelines for minimum amount of exercise to see benefits, types of exercise and duration, and much more!

Physical activity is important for people with spinal cord injury. They can be active in many different ways, as long as they are moving their body. There are many other exercises that can be done on the chair, such as core strengthening exercises and arm exercises, but the key is that it’s very important to stay physically active while using a wheelchair. Simply standing and walking with assistive devices such as walkers or crutches is also beneficial, if possible.

It’s no secret that Physical activity is a key part of rehabilitation and healing for people with spinal cord injury. However, it can be difficult to find the right physical activity for someone who has limited mobility or is using a wheelchair. This video explores the benefits of physical activity for people with spinal cord injury, and how to make sure you are getting enough exercise when you are using a wheelchair.
