In this video Alec shows the simple clothesline pulley system he designed to help lift his wheelchair into his van. The pulleys are attached to the interior roof grab handles, one on each side. This changes the direction of the wheelchair as Alec lifts it up and into the van. The clothesline attaches to a receiver on the back of his wheelchair. Alec pulls the wheelchair in from the front seat, an easy way to get the chair into the van without purchasing an expensive lift. The pulleys cost less than $10 at a hardware store, as compared to expensive Robotic arms. Alec designed this system when he had a shoulder injury and needed a one-armed way to lift his wheelchair into the van. He is a Peer Support volunteer in Peterborough who specializes in DIY fixes for everyday accessibility problems. Great tip Alec!
