Building a Self-Catherization Routine That Fits Your Life

Creating a daily routine around self-catheterization can make the process feel more natural, predictable, and less stressful. While every person’s experience is different, developing habits that work for your lifestyle can help you feel more confident whether you’re at home, at work, or out and about.

Everyone is different, and figuring out what works best for you is key!

It can take time to get used to and learn how to self-catheterizing. With the help of your healthcare provider and some patience, you’ll learn the technique that works best for you. Integrating catheterization into your routine can help maintain bladder health and support your overall well-being.

Helpful Tips for Building Your Routine:

  1. Set an Alarm to Remind You
Setting an alarm (on your phone or watch, for example) can help ensure you catheterize at regular intervals. Over time, it may help you get used to regular catheterization!
  2. Stick to the number of catheterizations recommended by your healthcare professional
Your healthcare professional may adjust the number of times you need to catheterize according to your individual situation. It is important to always follow their guidance
  3. Make sure you empty your bladder completely
It is very important to empty your bladder completely every time you catheterize. Urine left in the bladder may cause infections. It can be helpful, especially if you are just starting to catheterize, to measure how much urine you empty daily. If you feel that there is a change in the amount of urine, please get in touch with your healthcare professional.
  4. Keep up your routine when you’re on the go
Going out shouldn’t disrupt your self-catheterization routine. A little planning can help you comfortably fit catheterization between activities like shopping, visiting a museum, or heading to the movies. Find times that naturally work for your day.
  5. Always make sure you have enough catheters
Before you leave home always take enough catheters with you. Having enough catheters on you ensures you can always empty your bladder.
